Women Of The Dream Awarded Grant From PNC Bank Foundation For College & Career Development To Local High School Girls
Camden, NJ Women of the Dream (WOD) has been awarded a major grant from PNC Bank Foundation to provide college, career development and workforce readiness to high school girls in Camden, NJ. The goal of the year-long program is to prepare girls for college and compete for a wide spectrum of professional careers within the global marketplace.
Twenty-four girls were selected by principals and school counselors from Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy and Charles Brimm Medical Arts High School, both public high schools, to participate in the weekly series of college & career readiness sessions, complemented by site visits to job locations, high end retail stores, restaurants, and colleges, networking opportunities with successful women of color, and other activities.
The inaugural program entitled “Empower” launched March 8, 2019. “Empower” encompasses topics such as writing college essays, resume building, dining etiquette and dress for success in the workplace workshops. Etiquette sessions conducted by The Delaware Valley School of Etiquette will focus on acceptable behavior in formal and informal settings, job interviews and networking events. The girls will have an opportunity to apply their knowledge during a visit to a high-end restaurant. The dress for success sessions will be conducted on location at a major retailer by fashion consultants.
WOD Founder and CEO Leslie Morris states, “Programs such as this within underserved communities not only help build girls confidence to pursue college and career success, but also, by working closely with mentors who are seasoned professionals within their industries, they will recognize the supportive and caring mechanism within their own community that serves to reinforce their efforts toward future success. This is important to help them beyond high school when there are perceived insurmountable challenges to attain their personal and professional goals.”
Women of the Dream, Inc. is a growing 501-C-3 organization that provides program services to girls and young women, ages 12-18 in Camden, NJ and other underserved communities.
